St Mary's Update

Site setup, safety and access works are all well under way at St. Mary’s Hospital. Site security has been put in place to give 24/7 cover.

Asbestos removals are also well under way to enable selected buildings to be demolished early in 2012.

As well as demolition there will be a high level of recycling and salvage on site. From Victorian to more modern items anything that can be re-used or recycled will be diverted from landfill. Scrap metals have been removed from all of the buildings to prevent theft.

Architectural features are being removed and stored before being handed back to the client.

2012 will see some big changes at St. Mary’s. We will be regularly updating our website with news as work progresses.

Demolition & Salvage ltd. are delighted to announce that they have been awarded the high profile 48 week contract to demolish the redundant sections of St. Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth. Following a competitive tender process the company was subject to interview and further assessments.

We scored a remarkable 100 % when judged against cost, presentation, Health & Safety and quality benchmarks.

Recycling on site of materials arising from the works is key and the client, Portsmouth Hospitals Trust is keen to make the most of this unique opportunity. The company will be implementing a comprehensive site waste management plan and using state of the art recycling equipment to meet recycling targets.

Work is starting now to prepare the site with security and welfare facilities being installed. As part of our management package for the works we will be launching a dedicated website covering news from the site and charting the progress of the contract. Keeping the public informed is all part of what will be the largest single demolition contract the City of Portsmouth has seen for some years.

Demolition of Chichester College - Brinsbury Campus

Demolition & Salvage has recently completed a demolition project at Chichester College, Brinsbury Campus in Pulborough.

The work involves demolishing a range of temporary and permanent buildings making way for new buildings that form part of the development plan for the college.

We were delighted to be selected to carry out the works which were ordered following a tender process which focused on best value as well as taking into consideration a host of environmental, quality, Health & Safety and training issues.

The company worked with closely with Chichester College staff and their contractors to divert existing services and to keep others live whilst the work was carried out.

The contract was completed as planned during the summer holiday period with no problems.

Southsea Blaze

At 5.35 pm last night a fire on Southsea pier had 80 fire fighters from 7 appliances trying to control the blaze.

The building formally Joanna’s nightclub collapsed onto a power sub-station leaving 500 local residents without electricity.

Fire crews worked throughout the night to keep the area safe and under control.

The police force says the fire is not linked to riots in other parts of the country, and an investigation is ongoing.

Demolition and Salvage Ltd have been called in by the Principal Building Control Officer of Portsmouth City Council to help Hampshire fire and rescue in making safe Savoy Buildings, South Parade Southsea.

We have excellent relations with the Fire Service, hosting county and international Urban Search and Rescue exercises at our Portsdown Main site.

Demolition and Salvage staff and directors were on site late last night assessing situation.Machinery is moving to site today to make the building safe.

The company regularly carries out emergency works and have worked with Hampshire and Sussex fire service and the MOD.

We have a reputation for helping whatever the situation.

Weighbridge

To help with sales control and to ensure that vehicles are not overloaded Demolition and Salvage Ltd have installed a surface counted 15 metre 50 tonne electronic weighbridge at Portsdown Main Site.
In the spirit of recycling the unit was salvaged from a redevelopment project at Marchwood, saving cost, transport and materials.
Reconditioned and installed by Demolition and Salvage staff a new indicator has been fitted and final calibration has been carried out by Solent Scales, www.solentscales.co.uk

The Weighbridge is a modular design that can be relocated to other sites in the future with the minimum of fuss.

Bishopstoke

Demolition and Salvage are currently demolishing the former Bishopstoke Motors workshop and filling station. Work Includes the safe removal and disposal of Asbestos Cement roof sheets, the decommissioning and removal of the underground fuel tanks.

The site is being redeveloped as part of a housing scheme and all hardcore and concrete is being crushed on site for use as fill material for the new development. An estimated 97% of the materials arising are being recycled.

Demolition of Goonilly Satellite Earth Station - Antenna 2

Demolition and Salvage Ltd were hired to do the high reach work for the demolition of one of the oldest, giant satellite dishes at the Satellite Earth Station at BT's Goonhilly Downs in Cornwall.

Antenna 2, the second dish to be built in 1968, has reached the end of its operational life. The dismantling of this 960 tonne landmark will take three months and will make way for faster, more advanced fibre-optic transfer equipment.

Parts of the antenna, such as the transmitters have been recovered for use by some of the other 60 dishes at the station. A 10-tonne, 10 metre long screw, which was used to elevate the dish will be recovered and put on display outside the Goonhilly visitors centre.

MoD Site Demolition

Demolition and Salvage are currently demolishing an Art Deco building at DSTL Portsdown Main also known as Aswe. The building was designed in the 1930’s by the MoD for electronics research and radar production. The construction was delayed by world war 2 and was not completed until 1952.

The site formerly owned by DSTL Executive agency, was no longer suitable as an office environment as the remote location of the building could not keep up with the ever changing technologies in the industry. When trying to sell the building a survey made announced that it was structurally unsafe. The site was shut in 1997.

Demolition and Salvage has a long history of working on the site. The style of the building and amazing views of Portsmouth Dockyard, the sea and the South Downs has attracted lots of attention from artists and photographers over the years. This is a site that will definitely be missed.

On completion of the job the site will be handed back to Greenfield whilst the MOD conclude their long term plans.

Cinema History Demolished

The Carlton Cinema in Cosham's High Street has been demolished after 70 years of service. The cinema was first opened in 1937 by Jack Buchana, famous actor and singer of the 30's, who named the establishment " The Carlton Super Cinema".

In 2007 the cinema was finally put out of business due to the current climate and hazardous structure. Over a period of eight years three different companies had tried to make a profit from the cinema and failed. After much effort and many campaigns against it, work started to demolish the building in December 2010.

The decline of Cinema's in the city of Portsmouth has been a dramatic one. Falling from 30 to only three.

The demolition of the cinema is still in progress and flats will supposedly replace this historic building.
